I composed this piece in 2005, influenced by the wide variety of music
I heard from the streets while living in New York City.
In New York City, performances took place not only in concert halls, but also in subways, streets, parks, cafes, and everywhere else. Classical, rock, ethnic, jazz, and sometimes other kinds of music that I had never heard before flowed naturally into my ears.
I had always wanted a marimba piece with a strong beat, so I composed
this piece with the hope that it would be as free and powerful as the image
of New York City.
In the piece, I interweaved jazz scales in places and basically focused
on rhythm, using square beats like eights and sixteens as a foundation.
I hope you enjoy “Marimbeats!” = “various beats bouncing on the marimba keyboard.
Composed in June 2005
